Chennai is home to the Guindy National Park located near the IIT campus and the Aringnar Anna Zoological Park at Vandaloor.
Guindy National Park
Guindy National Park is a protected area within Chennai and entry to visitors requires permission. Adjoining the park is the popular Snake Park and Childrens Park which are popular tourist spots for visitors to Chennai.
Guindy Snake Park
The Guindy Snake Park is home to a collection of snakes including cobras, vipers, pythons.
Guindy Children's Park
The Guindy Chindren's Park is adjacent to the IIT campus and exhibits birds like peacocks, pelicans, owls, parrots, love-birds, a small aquarium with around six different types of fishes, a collection of snakes, turtles, crocodiles and seals, animals including different breeds of monkeys, fox, hyena and more. There is a large space play area for kids with swings, seesaws , slides, etc.,
Commuting to Guindy Snake Park / Children Park
Though the name suggests the location to be Guindy, it is very far away from the typical Guindy locality on the GST Road, which is also connected by Tambaram-Beach suburban trains.
The more appropriate name for the stage, as referred to when commuting to this location will be, IIT Chennai / Anna University or the Engineering College stage. There are a lot of
Chennai MTC Bus Routes connecting Snake Park and Children's Park. The Kasturiba Nagar station (near Madhya Kailash) on the MRTS suburban train route is around 800 meters from the park.
Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandaloor
The Arignar Anna Zoological park in Vandaloor is supposed to the the largest zoo in India. It is in the Southern outskirts of Chennai city.
The zoo houses birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fishes, along with rich collection of plant species. The Vandalur zoo authority enables protection of endangered / threatened species, particularly from the Western and Eastern ghats of deccan India.
Birds found here include Peafowl, Spoon Bill White, Eastern White Stork, Grey Horn Bill, White Bellied Sea Eagle, Babbler, Black-tailed Bantem Hen, Bulbuls, Cassowary, Cockatiel, different types of Egrets, Herons, Munias, Owls, Fowls, Parakeets, Doves, Flamingo and Pelicans.
Mammals in the zoo include bears, leopards , languors , macaques, squirrels, tigers, otters, lions, jungle cats and dogs, deers, elephants, jackals, giraffe, chimpanzees, baboons, hippos, hyena , jaguar, kangaroos, zebra and boars.
Reptiles include lizards, crocodiles, chameleon and snakes like cobras, pythons and vipers. Along with this, there are different types of amphibians and fishes maintained at the zoo.
The zoo is open all round the year with weekly holidays on Tuesday. The zoo will be more crowded during weekends and during the mid-January harvest festival of Pongal.
