The Metropolitan Transport Corporation Buses or MTC Buses as referred to by Chennai-ites caters well to the local commuting.
MTC has a fleet of more than 3257 buses catering to over 622 routes [1] and offers cheap and well connected public commuting options in Chennai. MTC operates its fleet with full strength during the peak traffic hours, while limiting services during noon time. The night services are also limited and are charged twice the ordinary charges (refer to the MTC Bus Fares section below).

MTC Bus Fares :
For an "ordinary" MTC bus, The minimum fare starts at Rs.2 per stage, where each "stage" is approximately 2 kms. This can go up to Rs.7 for 23 stages.[2]
For LSS (Limited Stop Service), the per stage charge is 50 paisa more than ordinary charges.
For Express buses, the rates are 1.5 times the ordinary charges.
For Deluxe buses, the rates are double the LSS fares.
M-Service have flat rates starting from Rs.3 to going up to Rs.7.
For Night Services, the rates are twice that of ordinary buses.
