Suburban Trains in Chennai


Suburban Trains in Chennai is increasing its share of commuters, helping bring down the rush in MTC buses, with more routes available via the introduction of MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System) and the proposed Metro rail project. 

For many years, the suburban trains were sharing lines with the long-distance lines and hence served only in the following routes..
  • Tambaram <--> Chennai Beach,
  • Chennai Beach <--> Gummidipundi,
  • Chennai Central <--> Ambattur/Thiruvallur/Arakkonam,
  • Chennai Central <--> Gummidipundi/Sullurpetta 
But with the introduction of MRTS, now the South-East of Chennai city is covered by the suburban train network. Currently MRTS services the following route..
  • Chennai Beach <--> Velachery.

This route goes via the some important stations including Airport (Tirusulam RS) , and Egmore (Egmore RS) and Chennai Central Rail Terminal (Park RS).
